WE DID IT

©2003 by Nancy Schimmel

We used to run our fridges with CFCs
Chlorinated fluorocarbons sprayed our hair
Thirty years ago we said “Golly jeez!
Our hairspray is destroying the ozone layer!”

Voluntary limits were of course proposed
But the industry leaders did nothing at all
You can’t leave the atmosphere to CEOs
So the world signed a treaty at Montreal

Chorus: We did it, we did it,
We all got together and we did it.
All over the world we got on top of the problem
And we’re feeling on top of the world.

CEOs are stubborn but engineers are smart
They found good substitutes for CFCs
It took the Montreal Protocol to make them start
Now we don’t need CFCs to make our fridges freeze

Chorus

CFCs last a hecka long time
So in spite of the ban the hole’s been growing fast
Letting in the rays that damage our skin
But the growing is slowing down at last

Chorus

Now the auto makers sing the same tune,
Say they don’t need laws to lower CO2
So we need to get together, and say right soon
“We’ve got a little Kyoto Treaty for you

So do it, just do it,
We know you can do it cause we did it,
All over the world we got on top of the problem
And we’re feeling on top of the world.”
